Lincoln was elected president in November in 1860, and took office March 4, 1861.South Carolina had threatened to secede, if Lincoln won the presidency. Four days after the election, legislature met at Charleston and South Carolina unanimously voted to secede.Six weeks later, six other states followed: Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas. Four more stated wanted join later.The seven secedes created a government, called The Confederate States of America.They chose Jefferson Davis as president. The South wanted their independence. A total of eleven states were succeeding from the Union. In Lincoln inaugural address, he stated that there would be no conflict unless the south provoked it. The attack of Fort Sumpter on April 12, 1861 provoked the North to fight Lincoln was able to gain the support of the crucial Border States of Missouri, Kentucky, M Maryland, Delaware and West Virginia. Lincoln was aware that these were slave states; therefore he publicly declared he was not fighting to free the slaves. Lincoln needed the Border States if he threatened slavery, the Border States might join the confederacy, including Ohio, Indiana and Illinois. He repeatly stated that his purpose was to save the union Lincoln also stated "I am not, nor even have been, in favor of bringing about in anyway the social and political equality of the white and black races." Emancipation will come in God's good time." Lincoln did not want slavery to expand into the western territories. Lincoln's proclamation declared forever free the slaves in those confederate states still in rebellion. Lincoln's goal was also to strengthen the moral cause of the Union at home and abroad. After learning of the proclamation, many slaves fled to the Union armies, thus leaving the plantations without worker.
