randomize participants to groups. All these simple tactics help researchers
randomly assign participants into groups. These tactics are used worldwide, in different
settings and space but all do the same job; which is randomizing participants
to groups. Larsson (2016) mentions how the randomized controlled design is the
gold standard approach for identifying causal effect.

            There are different types of random
assignment: block, simple and stratified randomization. Block randomization is
intended to randomize subjects into groups that results in equal sample size.
Within a randomized block design, the experimenter than divides the
subjects/participants into subgroups called blocks. So that the variability
within blocks is less than between the blocks. Simple randomization is based on
a single sequence of random assignment and is widely used through
studies/research. This specific technique is the most common yet basic method
for simple randomization. Lastly, stratified randomization is when participants
enter a two-stage procedure in which the participants then start clinical
trials.

            As
stated in our learning module for the week, one of the major goals of
psychological research is to identify various factors that cause changes in
thought, feelings and behavior. This is showing the importance of causality and
how it relates to random assignment/experiment. A randomized experiment is a
research study in which the independent variable is manipulated by the
researcher and where the participants are randomly assigned to a condition.

            The only time you do not have to
randomly assign participants to a group is when you are conducting a
quasi-experimental research study. In a quasi-experimental research study,
participants are not randomized because they have to have specific
characteristics to belong in a specific group for the study. Shannonhouse, Lin,
Shaw and Porter (2015) used a quasi-experimental design to investigate the
differences between 104 school personnel who received a standardized suicide
awareness and prevention training. There results indicated significant
differences between those with and without previous training experience on all
of the dependent variables at pretest.

            A researcher can draw conclusions
without randomization by the idea of correlation does not equal causation. A
researcher can drop correlations but they can’t fully claim and say that it was
happening. A researcher first needs to come up with a hypothesis and research
question to lay the platform for their study. When coming up with a hypothesis
and research question, you hope by the end of your study that the question
would be answered and then you’ll find out if your hypothesis was correct or
not. By manipulating variables and randomly assigning participants to
experimental conditions, researchers than gain a great deal of control over
their study.

            Random assignment ends up being very
important in psychology let alone in experimental conditions. At the end of the
day, the participants and the safety of the participants is the most important
part of the study. As well as making sure you avoid selection bias when
