Building respect for our state and local law enforcement is important. We need to stop disrespecting and going against our officers. People need to learn to support our law enforcement and give them the respect they deserve. They are the people we call when an emergency happens and they are always there to protect us. Some programs that can help build respect are: Neighborhood Watch, Community and School Presentations and K-9, and Youth Engagement Programs. The Neighborhood Watch Program was started in 1972. It’s one of the oldest and most effective crime prevention programs still used. People report suspicious behavior to the police. This is a way to bring together local officials, Law Enforcement, and the people of the neighborhood to make their community more safe.Community and School Presentations & K-9 department are apart of an education awareness program. Law enforcements take their K-9 department to school and out into the community to explain the roles and duties of the officer and dogs. They also explain skills used by the officer to help the dog find victims, suspects, drugs, and bombs. This helps the community understand the hard work it takes to keep them safe. It is important for people to see the officers as protectors and the dogs as helpers of the law enforcement. Without the help of the dogs the law enforcement might not be as protected as they are now.Youth Engagement Programs target kids of all age groups. Kids are more at risk when it comes to crimes committed against people. Whether they see or experience violence, it has a long effect on them. Some of the programs that are for kids are: Bullying prevention, Cyberbullying, and D.A.R.E. Bullying is one of the worst problems at school.
