During the age of the Soviet Union (modern day Russia) was a communist party. This makes it a state where all the goods are equally shared among the people of the society. However, there is an exception for the government elite. This meaning the government ran everything including the economy, ownership of property, and even businesses.  During the 1940’s in London George Orwell, a journalist and author wrote the book “Animal Farm”. He wrote “Animal Farm” in 1945 before his famous work of “Nineteen Eighty-Four”. Animal Farm described in Biography.com’s words “Animal Farm (1945) was an anti-Soviet satire in a pastoral setting featuring two pigs as its main protagonists.” (Biography.com Editors), meaning Animal Farm is an anti-Soviet book. Written to represent the communist party affiliated with in the Soviet Union. Animal Farm was written to show a farm which is ran under a Soviet Union style communist using a group of farm animals. It also shows how the system of government works on the farm, with the pigs on top and all the other animals below them considered inferior. Although the Soviet Union no longer exists the book still provides a very powerful lesson in the ideas communism, rebellions, and power-hungry leaders. Some of the lessons it is trying to teach are still in play today in different styles of government, like rebellions.George Orwell bases his book on the idea of communism in Soviet Union Russia. Although there are not many communist states around it provides a powerful and important lesson in what life would be like in a communist society. In the book he depicts the government with pigs as the elites, within the elites there was Napoleon and Snowball which was the leaders of the farm. Napoleon and Snowball from Animal Farm both represent powerful people from the Soviet Union Communist party, with Napoleon as Joseph Stalin and Snowball as Leon Trotsky.  Although both Josef and Leon are dead the roles they played in the Soviet Union affected everyone around them. Their similarity extends to their behaviors in the book both Napoleon and Snowball hated each other and often opposes each other’s idea. Their counterparts Joseph and Leon where rivals as well opposing each other.  The idea of Communism is still taught today to show the benefit and the damage it can cause to the economy and to its people. In Animal Farm when the idea of a Communist government just took place and it worked smoothly for the pigs and the animals. In George Orwell’s word “In the end, they finished the harvest in two days’ less time than it had usually taken Jones and his men.” (Orwell 19) this statement shows that when the animal first took over the farm was running smoother under the control of the pigs than it was under the control of the humans. Although there are not many communist governments left the largest one that still exists in North Korea. The book shows a little bit of inside life in a communist society without actually being there.Another one of Animal Farms many major topics is rebellion. This plays an extremely important role because most all of the powerful countries and states today started with a rebellion against a central government. An example would be the original rebellion against the Russian monarchy as quoted in academic.mu.edu,” The Russian Revolution of 1917 was one of the most significant events in the 20th century. It completely changed the government and outlook on life in the very large country of Russia.” (Fernholz). This quote directly relates to the rebellion on Animal Farm because like the following months in Russia the absents of the original government was not noticeable in a negative way, but all the changes were positive in both on Animal Farm and within the Soviet Union. The beginning of the rebellion on Animal Farm was when Old Major gave the speech about how the farm should be run by animal and no human at all. As Old Major states in the book “Now comrades, what is the nature of this life of ours? Let us face it: our life are miserable, laborious, and short. We are born, we are given just so much food as will keep the breath in our bodies … usefulness has come to an end we are slaughtered with hideous cruelty. No Animal in England knows the meaning of happiness or leisure after he is a year old. No animal in England is free. The life of an animal is misery and slavery: that is the plain truth.” (Orwell 5)In this paragraph Old Major describes how the animal life was not considered living, it was considered torture and misery. Describing it as slavery and miserable. This just shows how the animals living condition was at the time. Similar to the living condition in monarchy Russia. The speech later ended with the Old Major and the animals singing the song Beast Of England, which is about the animals controlling the countrysides of England and the neighboring countries for the sake of Animalism. Expressing how the animals should be living unlike how Old Major described it. Since Old Major was the oldest and eldest pig on the farm the other animals trusted him and took his word to heart. Shortly after Old Major died Mr. Jones, the farmer, started to treat the animals horribly because he was dealing with the lawsuits coming he was causing the animals to hate him more than they already did. Sparking the rebellion which sets up the whole book. The rebellion was a form of a government revolt that is still relevant to people all over the world today. The book shows how a simple rebellion causes such major changes on the farm and throughout the county side. Teaching people to speak out against anyone that is abusing power or position. Allowing people today to have a sense of speaking out against their superiors for a better way of life. In Animal Farm and in the Soviet Union it shows brutal executions of citizen that they believed were a rebellion against the central government while others were forced into admitting to crimes that they did not commit. Like the Great Purge in Soviet Union Russia according to The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Union ” Its target was not those who might oppose the party or refused to do its bidding, but dedicated party loyalists and millions of people who were perfectly willing to do what they were told.” (Kort 109) this is similar to the time in Animal Farm when Napoleon killed the animals without reason as described in Orwell’s words “To the amazement of everybody, three of them flung themselves upon Boxer. Boxer saw them coming and put out his great hoof, caught a dog in mid-air, and pinned him to the ground.” (Orwell 59). The two quote both shows how the leader of the communist government slaughtered and tried to slaughter their citizen regardless of their view in the government. To then it didn’t matter to them if they sided with the government or opposed it they were able to find something to convict them of. On Animal Farm Napoleon attempted to kill Boxer who was the hardest working animal on the farm. When Stalin ran the government he
