The first step for a business to be
ethically and social responsible is by establishing attainable goals and social
responsibility tasks for the company. The top-level management should ensure
that the goals they set for the business are measureable and all the actions
are leading towards the right paths (Rampton, 2017). To become a more
ethical business, a company should enforce code of conduct. A company’s values, ethics, objective
and responsibilities can be show through codes of conduct. It also acts as a
guideline and rules for all the employees to follow while performing their
respective tasks (Magloff, n.d.).
A cohesive understanding within the company can be create through code of
conduct. There are two codes of ethics, which are integrity and compliance,
integrity-based acts as a guiding values for their employees to interpret on
their own while compliance-based ethics code is more direct and tell the
employees what to do and what not to do. The company can insist on combining
two bases for the code of ethics to create a better culture of ethics in
business. The company must consider ethical standards as the guideline and
priority in business to achieve the product quality and maintain the standard
of company. They should be consistent to the policies stated in the code of
conduct no matter what situations faced. Whoever breaks the code of conduct
have to be be terminated and fired by the company. Moreover, the supervisors have to treat their employees well and
show respect to their employees. Employees will be motivated and complete their
tasks efficiently thus increase the company’s productivity.

In order to achieve organisation’s
standards and increase the effectiveness of codes of conduct, both employers
and employees have to involve themselves in ethical training. Top-level
management’s members hold the responsibilities to conduct ethical training
programs. Ethics training is important since employees’ behaviours will reflect
ultimately on the business. It also helps employees to identify their ethical
thoughts and issues of their decisions and strengthen ethical standards in
daily life (Mann, 2017).
A company should customize trainings that employees can relate and connect with
when they encounter specific situations. Different roles and different
departments’ employees carry out different tasks so a general training is not
enough to cater the needs of the whole company. It might be costly but worth
it.

Besides, employees in the companies
have to be assisted in facing all possible issues especially ethical dilemma. Employees
need to be aware of the problems they will face in their job. For example, a
front line worker need to understand all the decisions and reasons made by the
top-level management of the company in order to answer customers’ inquiries
effectively. They also need to know how to choose between two or more ethically
responsible courses of actions while each of it leads to a different outcome. Companies
shall provide more information while leading the employees to choose the best
decision that is beneficial to the company. This may make the employees feel
more connected to the company and motivate them to perform well in their tasks (Newlands, 2017).

In today business world, corporate
social responsibilities (CSR) is very important to all companies. This can be
explained by if a business has carried out social responsibility programs, it
helps the company to build up its image, reputation and even can increase its
competitiveness. By implement social responsibility programs, a company can win
employees, customers and society’s trust and respect. According to “Carroll’s
CSR Pyramid”, the first
level is economic responsibilities, the second level is legal responsibilities,
the third level ethical responsibilities and the top level is philanthropic
responsibilities. It means that the main goal of the company is earning
profits, the second level
is obeying the law, the third level is being ethical and the top level is being
a good corporate citizen (Dudovskiy, 2012). One of the ways to show social
responsibility of a company is through philanthropy. A company can set up a
donation box or engage in a fundraising event to make their company more socially conscious. Carlsberg is a good example
of doing business ethically because although their main goal is being
profitable that is to be the fastest growing global brewer but they also
concerned about social well-being. They invested a lot of money and time in
community activities for example in education and sports field to return to
society. “I Love Chinese Education Charity Concert” is one of the CSR programs Carlsberg
organized to support the development of Chinese schools. They involved in
social responsibility programs not only by helping the society but also raises
its business values and benefits for their shareholders (Brusendorf, 2014).

On the other hand, a
business can be ethical by showing concern to the environment. Environmental ethics is defined as the
interaction of human with nature. In a business sense, environmental ethics is considered
as a company’s responsibility to protect the environment (Kenneth,
n.d.).
Public awareness of the environmental damage that caused by human action has
driven a demand for protecting, mending, and preserving rather than harming or
destroying the natural environment. The environmental responsibility of
businesses can be divided into many theories for example Neo-Classical Theory
and Classical Theory. Neo-Classical Theory states that as the public awareness
gradually increase, businesses get started to take part and participate in
environmental business ethics to avoid the environment getting harm. All business
owners should consider sustainability development when running their business.
Environmental sustainability is the business makes decisions that considered protecting
the natural environment. Maybe someone may argue that the environmental
sustainability is not the responsibility of businesses stated in classical
theory. However, environmental sustainability had now become an effective way
to differentiate a company while competing with other competitors in the
market. Environmentally sustainable help a company to improve their public image as consumers more
prefer products and services that are eco-friendly. Companies can
improve their environmental sustainability by developing and acquiring green
businesses includes actions such as using green products and packages, conserving energy, reducing waste
and recycling. They should implement waste control and prevention to
manage and reduce the amount of waste that generated by the operations. An
ethical and social responsible company must have conscious of saving
electricity and reduce the usage of electricity as much as possible (Corporate Social Reponsibility, n.d.).

Nonetheless,
business can be ethical and socially responsible by being transparent. Transparency
is a part of honesty. It means that a business have to public their progress
and explain the reasons behind for all the decisions made. It doesn’t mean that
sharing out private information and plans but just simply letting stakeholders especially
shareholders feel like they are part of the company. To simplify it, a company
should behave transparently by not to cover information which others may
reasonably need to know, at the same time would not cause any troubles to the
company to release. A business can be ethic and socially
responsible by making an unmistakable and completely created ethics statement.
They may need some assistance of the facilitators from top executive to consider
what ethics are crucial to the company and reasons behind it. They need to
produce statements that are appropriated and have been discussed by all
employees. They can also show their honesty by being clear and
steady in sending marketing messages, being up front with clients some time
recently, during and after sales and completing on all commitments they make in
business and community dealings (Kokemuller, n.d.). By being forcefully and straightforwardly transparent,
a company can earn trust from the society. While being totally honest about
company’s practices, it sends a message to the world that the company puts a
high incentive on their social responsibilities and they are not reluctant to
say so. The quote action speaks louder than the words should be implement by
all the employees in the company (Council, 2016). A company have to accomplish tasks and
goals that they promised to achieve in order to build a strong trust between
the stakeholders and the society. Companies need to provide detailed reports to
the stakeholders for examples investors and shareholders to guarantee that they
know precisely what steps they are taking to enhance socially responsible
activities (Lewis,
n.d.).

To sum up, we can know that educating employees, establishing attainable
goals and enforce ethical standards strictly, contributing back to the
community, act transparently to the outsiders especially to the stakeholders
and response to the environmental issues are equally important in order to show
business ethics and
corporate social responsibility. Ethics and social responsible behaviour
should not be only implement on individual but also without neglecting on
business industries. A business should have the solid implementation of ethics
and social responsible so that unethical decisions will not make by them and
cause any unwanted consequences.
