How to discover and switch MAC address on your PC
Media access control address is also called
physical address. It is your PC unique hardware number. It is the same with
your Ethernet address. A corresponding IP address is generated against your
device when you are connected to the internet as a host. Data link layer of the
network has a sublayer called Media Access Control; it uses that MAC address of
your device to register it on the network. Each physical device type possesses
different MAC sublayer. All operating system contains an option to change MAC
address. This article will guide to find MAC address of different operating
systems and to alter them.
Method to find MAC address in
There is a specific command– “ipconfig” in
latest versions of the window to check MAC address. Old versions of window like
98 and window 99 used the command– “winipcfg”. Both commands may display
different MAC address for one device but there is only one address for one
network card. Window O.S may maintain more than one MAC address, which is not
associated with hardware of the device. Some VPN clients have their own MAC
address. MAC address of these virtual networks has same length and format as
MAC address computer hardware.
Searching MAC address in UNIX or
LINUX operating address:
The procedure of finding MAC address in
Unix and Linux O.S depends upon its versions. In some versions of Linux and
Unix O.S, the command “ipconfig” is used just like latest versions of windows.
Boot message sequence can also give information about MAC address. Boot up
files are placed in log files.
Searching Mac address in MAC O.S:
TCP/ IP control panel contains MAC address
in MAC system. The MAC address appears under the “Ethernet icon” if MacTCP is
running on the system. Alternatively, if the open transport is running on the system
the MAC address will be shown under “info” or “user mode/Advanced”.
Altering MAC address in Windows:
Some network cards allow user to set custom
Mac address from their configuration pane in Device manager, while others may
not support this feature.
Open device manager by pressing window + X
button from the keyboard, then click device manager on the power user menu. On
the other hand, you can find device manager option or press window button and
then find device manager option.
Under the network adaptor section, right
click to find the properties of network interface you want to change.
the properties window, from the advanced tab select the “Network Address”.
Enable the value option and start typing
your desired MAC address but keep it in view that MAC address should be typed
without any space in characters.
If you are unable to find option then you
are not authorized to change the MAC address.
Altering MAC address in LINUX O.S:
In Linux, there is a graphical way, which
allows a user to spoof MAC address.
In Ubuntu, click the network icon from the
top panel, click “edit connection”, which you want to modify.
Click edit and enter the new MAC address in
the “Cloned MAC address” and then save your settings.
Change MAC address
Open a terminal window by pressing (Command
+ Space), type terminal and then press enter to open. Because, MAC as such does
not allow its user to change MAC address.
Type the following command:

Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
