recent years, the focus of health policy has shifted away from the provision of
reactive, acute care towards preventive care outside hospital 1.Hospitals and clinics are relying
extremely on technology to assist in patient monitoring. Also health care
systems designed with remote monitoring have been proven to improve patient’s
quality of life at reduced costs.Wearable medical devices such as heart rate
monitor, Blood Pressure monitor, SPO2 Sensor with wireless communication allow
immediate data transfer and considerably increase patient’s comfort during
measurements. Wireless communication has an irreplaceable place in
telemedicine. It provides health care assistance of individuals over a distance
by means of telecommunication 2.This integration
of mobile communications with wearable sensors has facilitated the shift of
healthcare services from clinic-centric to patient-centric and is termed as
“Telemedicine” in the literature 3. Telemedicine can be extremely
advantageous for people living in isolated communities and remote regions.Telemedicine is one of the most increasing technology
application applied to medical field because of the cost reduction it may offer
and the full monitoring ability it insures 4 5.
are a few weaknesses present in existing systems for patient monitoring. The
patient is monitored in ICU and the information exchanged to the PC is wired.
Such systems get to be troublesome where the separation between the system and
PC is more. The available systems are bulky and costly.Regular monitoring of
patients is unrealistic once he/she is released from doctor’s facilities. These
systems cannot be utilized at individual level. The other issue is that it is
not fit for transmitting information continuously.
A Context Aware
instantaneous subordinate healthcare architecture is used and it provides the
remote live monitoring of a patient by healthcare professionals 6. Wireless
BAN sensors are used to monitor blood pressure, ECG and blood oxygenation. GSM
and GPS network based system is used to find the location of the users when
they are in trouble and trigger the alarm. The alarm message is received by the
doctor or their family and action can be taken immediately 7.Remote patient
monitoring is another common form of telemedicine that has generated a lot of
interest in the networking community 8. It facilitates an improved quality of
life for the patient by enabling remote measurements and hence reduces routine
trips to the clinic 9. Wireless monitoring promises further improvements by
providing continuous monitoring, patient mobility, and improving patient
compliance with frequent and better quality measurements.
BLE based system has been shown to be
ideal for battery powered medical devices because of low power consumption in comparison
with other low-cost Bluetooth modules 10. A prototype of physiological
parameter monitoring system based on Arduino and Raspberry Pi is implemented 11.
The various vital parameters are measured and processed in Arduino and sent to
Rpi based web server for displaying. Zigbee is used for communication between
Arduino and Rpi. The updated parameters can be viewed from anywhere using an
internet enabled device. Wireless ECG monitoring system based on BLE technology
transmits the ECG data to a smartphone for further processing and displaying 12.
The proposed system can be operated for a long period of time due to BLE.

is presented. In section 3, the methodology is discussed. The results are
presented in section 4. At the end, section 5 presents the conclusion.
