Jane Austen is the
author of many novels like Sense and
Sensibility and Pride and Prejudice.
In both books, she tries to make an evidence of how limited were women options
in those days. Since they were born, women were often early arranged in
marriage. Situation that Austen reflects with irony at the beginning of Pride and Prejudice: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that
a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.” A
man could do whatever he wanted to, no matter if he was married or not. On the
other hand, a woman wasn’t able to do that like as Virginia Woolf reflected: “Love,
the poet said, is woman’s whole existence”. Since Neolithic, women have
been subordinated to a domestic world and men have dedicated all their forces
to make a living for their families. Independentment of the social position of
a woman, there wasn’t any more left to do. However, there have been always
exceptions and Virginia Woolf was one of them. Aware of the differences between
both sexes, she worked hard in order to overcome the social anonymousness of
women through writing. But it wasn’t so easy for a woman to become a writer,
first of all women were educated to be housewives and didn’t have any social
and economic resources.

morals never made easy being a woman also. Catholic church leaned on the
explanations of Aristoteles and the Old Testament to underestimate women. In

if they were independent and have innovative ideas. In addition to this, the
absence of effective contraceptives until the middle of the 20th
century was an obstacle for women because they weren’t able to make decisions
about their own bodies. The responsibility of family was then on men who could
get condoms if they wanted to and have the guts to get them. But important
influences like Freud had the opinion that condoms were a way of cultural
repression. In Second World War (1939-1945), women had to do the jobs that men
left while they were dealing with nationalism, colonization and Nazism. Since
then women have insisted to keep on working because “we can do it”, one of the
main ideas of feminism.

1960, with the invention of the famous “pill” and the washing machine, women
achieved a lot of independence. They started to have control of their own
bodies and consequently, women get more time to do whatever they wished. At the
same time, girls finally got the chance to access to superior studies that were
only possible for men. Knowledge and the contribution to society had made women
an important factor for capitalism. As Brigham Young said: “You educate a man; you educate a man. You
educate a woman; you educate a generation”. It’s well known that the major
part of children education is due to women. To sum up, we had the power to made
a better world with policies that promote equality and make justice to
