The Boston Consulting Group
Subject: Job Application.
I am a third-year student studying towards a Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) in Instrumentation and Control Engineering at the Manipal Institute of Technology. I am writing you to express my interest in the BCG Summer Internship in Consulting. Upon researching BCG, I was impressed by the culture at the firm and the way in which it promotes equal pay and gender equality. I am keen to gain a deeper insight into a career as a consultant intern due to BCG’s clarity in thinking and have decided to apply to BCG because of its global presence, excellence, and commitment to thought leadership.
As a senior majoring in Instrumentation and Control Engineering with a minor specialization in Business Management, I know that I would be an ideal candidate for this position. I have an avid interest in the consulting industry, and I believe that a Consulting Internship with the BCG will provide me with unparalleled experience in business strategy.
During my fourth semester at college, I developed a passion for data-driven analytics and consulting. Further, I took part in two international case study competitions: KPMG International Case Competition (KICC) and The Global Student Challenge (Inchainge), which influenced my decision to plan to intern in the field of consulting and part-take in similar extracurricular activities. My experience with different case study competitions inspired my enthusiasm for consulting.
Being the only intern, I sharpened my decision-making skills while supporting the installation of two brake-drum washing machines at an automobile industry during last summer. The environment was fast-paced and intense; thus, I was constantly analyzing data to determine the location where the machine could be placed. I would then identify the assembly and inspection lines and evaluate all possible alternatives without affecting the lines’ production. The decisions had to be quick, concise, and clearly conveyed to the supervisors working at the lines. As a result of my efforts, supported by my mentor, the company was able to cut down the manpower in handling the two machines by 66%, which also resulted in the process time to decrease by 30%. During my tenure, I was often praised for thinking about problems innovatively and solving them quickly. These skills, I believe, will definitely aid me in consulting.
My leadership as class president for a year, along with the drive I demonstrate as Placement Secretary at the Placement Club, have enabled me to completely utilize my attention to detail and organization while providing exemplary results. My previous employers can attest to my punctuality, loyalty, and service and affirm that they have entrusted me with increasing amounts of responsibility. As a student juggling multiple positions, I also developed excellent time-management skills and the ability to keep a cool head in high-pressure situations.
With minimal training, I expect to contribute significantly as a part of your team, and I am confident that I will be an asset to your organization. My qualifications are an excellent fit with the needs of your firm. In addition, my strong dedication to achieving excellence and my commitment to continue increasing my knowledge cannot but contribute to BCG’s continued prosperity.
One of the things which attracted me to this position is the diversity enjoyed by working across umpteen industries with numerous clients and the opportunity to make a real impact in shaping these industries. Lastly, I have relished looking at the various practice cases found on the BCG website, precisely the method of the approach taken when addressing different frameworks. I would welcome all opportunities to learn more about management consulting and the opportunities that BCG could afford me in the future. Thank you for your time and consideration.
