          Sleep is a natural condition of rest that every human needs to restore the energy and the power of the body on a daily basis. During sleep, every individual usually goes through five stages. These five stages develop in a cycle from Stage one, two, three, four and the five which is the Rapid eye movement sleep (REM). Then the cycle repeats itself again from stage one. In addition, humans spend half of their total amount of sleep in stage two, one fifth is spend in REM sleep, and the remaining time of their sleep is spent in the other stages. However, “Infants, by contrast, spend about half of their sleep time in REM sleep” (Berger, page1). Time has always been the solution of everything, but only if you use it correctly. But during sleep the right timing is that “Infants sleep about 16 hours a day, while teenagers need 9 hours on average. For most adults, 7 to 8 hours a night appears to be the best amount of sleep”. However, sleeping may be difficult to keep track of and obtain. Many people do not get enough sleep, while others might sleep more than the normal hours. All these causes may lead to sleeping disorders, which are syndromes distinguished by interference in the individuals condition and timing of sleep, an individuals amount of sleep, or in the behavior or physiological conditions related with sleep. Furthermore, sleeping affects our daily performance and our physical and mental health in a lot of ways that we are just beginning to interpret.

                At some point in peoples lives, it is more likely that everyone would have trouble sleeping. Whether it is staying asleep at night, or getting to sleep in the first place. Human beings needs to rest for a specific amount of time everyday to maintain their health and their brain. The brain is an impressive powerful tool that allows a human to move, see, smell, hear, touch, comprehend and learn. Something that has this amount of power and precision should get the rest it needs to restore and function in an everyday life. However, sleeping disorders will mostly affect the  brain and because of that it will reflect on the heath and the behaviour of an individual negatively. Forcing yourself to stay awake is one of the causes of sleeping disorders that may happen a lot because of the stress of work, school and because of many other reasons.  Sleeping disorder is one of the most common medical disorder of the sleep patterns of a human being. As an estimation there are about “150 million people worldwide that are currently suffering from sleeping problems” (Breus, page 1), that may lead to sleeping disorders. As much as it is dangerous, sleeping disorders are serious enough to interfere with social, mental, physical and emotional functioning in an individuals life. Sleeping disorders is something that should be discussed because sleeping is one of the main parts of a persons daily life. If a persons gets more or less of the sleep they get daily it could affect their health and cause many serious diseases.

The reason I looked into sleeping disorders in the first place is from my own personal experiences with insomnia and sleep apnea. As an Ib student who requires many hours of studying, researching and so much more, I stumbled and struggled with keeping up with my sleeping pattern, that urged the sense in me to look into this more and find its affects on my physiology and behaviour. Upon investigating this research, it will benefit the future researchers to understand the different factors of sleeping disorders that affect the physiology and behaviour of an individual. 

Sleeping disorder comes in many forms. The main sleeping disorders that will be considered: Insomnia, Narcolepsy and Sleep apnea.  The essay will look into several studies, such as the case study of a 42 year old named Anna,  the study of Bonuck (2011) and a study that examines the behavioural factors in patients suffering from sleep apnea and insomnia. Those three sleeping disorders will be discussed as to what extent does sleeping disorder affects an individuals physiology and behaviour.
