The world has seen a remarkable revolution in
industries. The Industrial Revolution 4.0 is something that is transforming
humankind unlike anything experienced before. I, as an electrical engineer and
working professional in the energy industry, acknowledge and am intrigued by
emerging technology fields such as robotics, the Internet of Things, Big Data,
artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and energy storage. I am
extremely eager to devote my long-term career to such a dynamic, fast-advancing
field of digital industry.

I completed my graduate studies at the Sardar
Patel College of Engineering, Mumbai University. My freshman year was flawless.
My firm grasp of basic sciences such as physics, mathematics, and chemistry
facilitated me immensely in appreciating the fundamentals of the subjects
covered in the curriculum. I did well until my second year. I realized that I
needed to put forth more effort, so I visited professors after class to learn
more and clear doubts. One of the professors appreciated my effort and helped
me get a summer internship. As a result, I developed an interest in my studies
and earned a CGPA of 7.23/10.

As I progressed through my undergraduate
studies, I gained substantial knowledge in subjects like computer programming,
power system, renewable energy source, electronic circuits, and control system.
I focused more on learning about power systems and integration of renewable
energy sources in present power grid. I also focused on learning the electronic
circuit, control system and its application in the field of robotics.
Simulation in software programs like MATLAB, PROTEUS, and ETAP further enhanced
my understanding of concepts. Hence, my undergraduate studies have provided a
strong foundation, which will certainly help me to understand and analyze the
concepts involved in the Industrial Engineering curriculum.

Also, I completed an internship at 500 kV
HVDC Terminal Station in Padghe, India, studying the transmission and
distribution of electricity. I also understood the benefits of using HVDC over
AC transmission, especially when it came to efficiency and cost optimization.
Moreover, off-the-class training experiences added greatly to my knowledge of
core concepts in electrical engineering, besides introducing me to fresh ideas
and techniques.

In the final year, I worked on a project
under Professor Nandkishor Kinhekar to maximize a photovoltaic (PV) system’s
output power by continuously tracking the maximum power point of the system. I
and a team member developed an algorithm to improve the solar panel’s
efficiency. It was an arduous task to execute the project in hardware. Working collaboratively
with my project guide, we were able to successfully complete the project,
improving the efficiency of the PV system by an impressive 85-90%.

Apart from academics, I am interested and
passionate about extracurricular activities. For instance, I was part of the
organizing committee for the college’s annual festival SPACE, where I was in
charge of the logistics team. My strong interpersonal and problem-solving
skills enabled me to successfully perform my role as a team leader. Overall, my
undergraduate college experiences have helped me in enhancing my management,
leadership, and interpersonal skills and have made me a responsible and
socially aware human being.

My hard work paid off with a job offer before
I graduated. I was recruited by the Japanese EPC consultancy firm, Toyo
Engineering. One of my most illuminating experiences during the two years I
spent in the company was the high-profile project, RAPID-Ethylene Cracker
Complex, for the client Petronas, Malaysia. For the very first task, I had used
my analytical and math skills to calculate the bill of quantity of grounding
material. I completed the task efficiently and saved 86% man-hours allocated to
this particular task, i.e. 240 man hours. I used simple Excel skills and
extrapolated data from a previous project to calculate the quantity of the
entire plant. I was appreciated for my approach by my
manager and Japanese counterpart. Now, this Excel sheet prepared by me is part
of Toyo’s reference document; it has already been used in few projects. Working
in consultancy for more than two years familiarized me with all the vital
skills required in an oil and gas industry, it also helped me in enhancing my
analytical, communication, and decision-making skills. I was extremely thrilled
by the experience gained from the project and was motivated to further explore
industrial engineering.

The digital method of manufacturing and
supply chain management, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning,
cloud computing and more, that are already established in leading global
economies like the US, are now in the forefront in India, an economy which has
until now been embedded in traditional ways of doing business. There are
enormous challenges for Indian industries in order to achieve global
competitiveness on the pricing front for the manufactured goods. This goal can
be accomplished by implementation of operations research, mathematical
modeling, and optimization of complex processes or systems, equipment, energy,
materials, and logistics, to name a few. I sensibly chose a master’s program in
Industrial Engineering as it will provide an opportunity to discover innovative
solutions to challenging problems. On successful completion of the program, I
aspire to pursue my career as a consultant and help industries in India
implement sustainable manufacturing policies, setting new standards for safer
and smarter performances.

The Master’s Program in Industrial
Engineering offered by Northeastern University (NEU) provides opportunities
available to learn state-of-the-art technologies, access a vast pool of technical
resources, and a solid program with industry aligned faculty and excellent
alumni network, which will enable me to accomplish my career goal. Cooperative
learning program offered by NEU will provide valuable hands-on experience
before graduation; this is something that I cannot get from a book. NEU’s faculty
and students have been making remarkable advances in artificial intelligence,
machine learning, data management and mining, healthcare delivery, and
informatics, among many other areas which truly intrigue me. I would regard my
admission to the Northeastern University not only as a great honor and success
but also as an obligation to work diligently. I believe that the excellence of
this program, along with my ability and motivation, will help me to attain my
goals.
