The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins was a fast paced, thrilling and adventurous novel exuding a storyline that captures the reader’s attention. The main characters Katniss and Peeta are two 16 year olds that both live in District 12. Katniss and Peeta have to go against each other in The Hunger Games which is tough for Katniss because Peeta had saved her life by giving her food prior. They then team together and eventually win The Games. They have different friends, different families, and contrasting backgrounds. The strategies that they use in and outside of The Games have differed as well. These two characters have many contrasting qualities and little similar qualities. Peeta is one of the more popular kids at school, whereas Katniss doesn’t hang out with many people at school and has a tight small circle of friends. Their backgrounds and lives at home are also different. Peeta is a baker at his family’s bakery where Katniss hunts in the woods for her family. Katniss’s father was killed in a mining incident that gave her mother her “dead eyes.” Both of Peeta’s parents Mrs. and Mr. Mellark are still living. His mother is harmful toward Peeta, and Katniss saw her hitting him at the bakery previously. His father is kind, and gave Katniss cookies before The Games. Katniss is a very self-sufficient person, though Peeta relies more on his family and the bakery. Katniss and Peeta’s strategies are very different. Peeta’s name gets drawn for The Games where Katniss volunteers so her sister, Prim, doesn’t have to go. They both became tributes of District 12 in the 74th Hunger Games. Katniss tries to appear brave and tough at the reaping. Katniss states that she “appears almost bored,” however Peeta’s plan is the opposite. He tries to appear frightened and fragile at the reaping. In the novel Katniss says, “Peeta Mellark, on the other hand, has obviously been crying and interestingly enough does not seem to be trying to cover it up.” If he appears frightened and fragile at the reaping, then when he gets into The Games, nobody will take the trouble to kill him. When his name gets called, thoughts flow through her mind. “Oh no, I think, Not him.” She thinks. Katniss is very impulsive (For example her decision to try to commit suicide at the end of the book) whereas Peeta is more level headed and calm. They both have a protective instinct; Katniss over Gale, Prim and Rue, and Peeta over primarily Katniss – both would die for those they loved. Peeta has liked Katniss since elementary school, and Katniss slowly started to like him back. Even though they have many contrasting qualities and little similar qualities, Katniss and Peeta pair together very well. The strategies that they have used in The Games differ, however, they still make a great team. Sometimes their difference can even help them. After all, opposites still do attract.
